Plants: Structure & Function
Teaching Activities
Woody Stem Structure Activity - Dendrochronology
In this activity students will identify growth rings and determine the age of the tree, as well as changes based on climatization. Although this activity uses paper strips as growth rings, using real tree samples is great for hands-on learning.
Plants are Part of Our Everyday Lives
This is a great activity to be used as an introduction to plants and to show students that plants are used in everyday life! Instruct students to write on a piece of paper (either in a group or individually) a list of the plants you might find in a fast food hamburger. After completion show students the list of plants found in fast-food burgers. They may be surprised to see how many plants are used to make a fast-food burger!
Identifying Structures
This knowledge check is great for students to test their knowledge of plant structures. This is grade prep before a test!
Transportation of Water and Nutrients in Plants
These demos/labs are applicable to the transports of water and nutrients in plants. Create questions for students to reflect on the demos and apply concepts they have learned over the course of the unit.
Applying Maple Syrup Production to Transportation in Plants
A great way to apply transportation in plants to real-world concepts is through the production of yummy maple syrup! See the PowerPoint presentations below.
